Saree Frape (Gati Wali Dhoti)
The further we are from our roots the more we.love and hold onto our traditions and culture. We often see that when we travel across the world at how Indians settled abroad celebrate not just major festivals but even rituals which we have gradually diluted and finally let go. Similarly as Garhwalis who visit Uttrakhand once a year we love all.the traditions that we can follow and often are surprised when we realise that people in the villages do not follow or have given it a different avtaar . Over time everything evolves and takes on a different form. In the culture section we will cover traditions that were followed by earlier generations , food that our tastebuds still yearn for and clothing that differs from one end of Uttrakhand to the other.
Saree (Dhoti /Gati)
Saree (Dhoti /Gati)The lesser known ways to drape a saree is the one draped by women in Uttrakhand. The way the saree is draped is convenient as there is no palla and it allows the women of Uttrakhand to carry on their work without the thought of how to manage a saree which is generally considered cumbersome. The saree is tied in such a way that it naturally creates pockets for women to keep snacks to munch on and also as i was shown once the palla which is actually around waist can be folded to keep additional stuff As a ardent saree lover I once posted the style in one of my saree groups and a number of women wanted to learn the style and art of wrapping it in a such a unique way. The palla actually wraps around like a skirt and can be seen in all its glory. For the younger generation I would definitely say it actually looks like a dress if tied properly and the combination or style.of blouse you wear with it can make it as traditional or modern as you what it to be Written by - Lata Singh, Village Nau, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand
